Expérimental et théorique Description
When several particles float at the surface of a liquid, they tend to aggregate. This well-known phenomenon results from capillary attraction, sometimes referred to as the “Cheerios effect”: each particle moves on a surface deformed by the presence of the other particles, the deformation being induced by the meniscus formed along the contact line of each particle. We aim to investigate the behavior of an aggregate of floating particles in the presence of surface waves. We consider either Faraday waves (short capillary waves in a vibrated container) or long gravity waves in a water tank. Depending on the particle surface density and the wave amplitude, we expect collective behavior resembling that of a gas (a dilute system with disordered motion), a liquid (a denser system with strongly correlated motion), or a solid (a very dense system with crystalline order and defects). The question is to what extent the disorder generated by the waves play a role similar to that of temperature.
