Can heating protect quantum entanglement? Entanglement is a key resource for quantum technologies, but coupling to an environment can make it disappear abruptly, a phenomenon known as entanglement sudden death. This internship will explore whether an unusual quantum magnet can delay this loss or allow entanglement to revive.
We will study two spin qubits coupled to a Kitaev ladder, a tractable model of a quantum spin liquid. In this system, thermal excitations act as an effective source of disorder and can localise other excitations. This raises a counterintuitive question: can heating restrict the spread of quantum information into the environment and help preserve entanglement?
The student will combine analytical calculations with numerical simulations to investigate how entanglement evolves with temperature and qubit-environment coupling. Starting from simple limits and small systems, the project can extend to the role of environmental memory and localisation. The internship offers training in quantum magnetism, open quantum systems and numerical methods such as exact diagonalisation in Python. A background in quantum mechanics and an interest in analytical and computational work are expected.
